The 2000s Man
- Title:
- This menswear look shows a typical preppy look of the 2000s. It is based primarily on Ed Westwick’s style as Chuck Bass on Gossip Girl, who was known for his ultra-preppy, often feminine, fashion sense and his sexist, masculine behaviors. This combination of reinforcing gender roles while defying them in his wardrobe also redirected the preppy narrative back to the preppy man as one with money, privilege, and power. He often wore bright color combinations, such as purple and yellow, and was always seen with his signature patchwork silk scarf. The yellow Brooks Brothers slacks and the purple LL Bean cotton V-neck cardigan are direct reflections of a look worn by Chuck Bass in Season 1 (2007). The scarf is a replica of the scarf Chuck Bass frequently wore and defined as his signature on the second episode of the series (1x02 The Wild Brunch). While talking to Nate, another main character, Chuck made the following statement: “Don’t mock the scarf, Nathaniel. It’s my signature.” The scarf is red, navy, and off-white with polka dots. The Burberry button down is light pink with a contrast collar that features the signature Burberry check on the lining. Well-constructed, light pink, and designer, it is another style frequently seen on Chuck Bass.
