The 1980s Man

This menswear look shows a typical preppy look of the 1980s, based on research from films of the decade. It is primarily based on Andrew McCarthy’s style in Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo’s Fire. In contrast to Andie, Blane from Pretty in Pink is a classically preppy character, part of the wealthy, preppy group of high school students. He wears classic pieces, a lot of which overlap with Andie’s pieces, but in more traditional ways. The Lacoste polo shirt from the 1980s is light blue and short sleeved, with the logo on a front breast pocket. It has buttons all down the front and was purchased from a thrift shop in Spain around the year 2000. The 1980’s Brooks Brothers linen blazer sportcoat has two buttons and is beige in color. The Club Room pants are linen and cotton, made in Sri Lanka in the 1980s. They are high waisted and pleated and donated by David Crandell.
